The All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have finally launched their campaigns ahead of the governorship elections slated to hold February 28, 2015.
While the APC kick - started it's campaign last Tuesday at the new Adobe Amesiamaka Stadium in Greater Port Harcourt, near the Port Harcourt International Airport, Omagwa, the PDP launched its electioneering campaigns Wednesday at Isiokpo, headquarters of Ikwerre Local Government Area.
Both events were attended by political bigwigs, supporters, and the candidates for the governorship elections as well as others vying for other elective positions in the state House of Assembly, House of Representatives and Senate.
At the APC event, the Presidential candidate and his running mate, Muhammad Buhari and Yemi Osinbajo, the national leadership of the party and candidates contesting for various positions in other states and at the national level stormed the over 40,000-capacity stadium to show-off the stuff they are made of, with a bid to endearing themselves to the electorate.
Speeches were made by Rivers State Governor, Chibuike Amaechi, Muhammadu Buhari, Speaker of House of Representatives, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, the party's National Chairman, John Odigie-Oyegun, among others, explaining why voters in the state and across the country should effect change in the nation's governance structure by electing APC candidates in the next elections.
The Governorship candidate of APC in Rivers State, Dr Dakuku Peterside promised to consolidate on the gains of the present administration, and also improve on existing infrastructure while addressing issues in all the sectors of the state's economy, just as he pledged to run an all-inclusive government, if elected on February 28.
But another hallmark of the event is the attack by unknown gunmen on supporters of APC travelling from Khana, Asari-Turu and Akuku-Toru local government areas to grace the campaign kick-off.
The Rivers State police command, which acknowledged the attack by masked gunmen, said it has already swung into action to track down the perpetrators of the crime.
At the PDP event, the governorship candidate, Barrister Nyesom Wike, also promised to revitalise the judiciary and the legislature, while focusing attention on moving the state forward, integrating it's activities in consonance with the policies and programmes of the Federal Government, if elected.
